TERRITORY
OUR WORLD: TUSCANY
A tourist destination par excellence for its architectural and artistic wealth, Tuscany, and in particular Pisa, is also an important reference point for medical research and the use of the most advanced technologies in the field. And let’s not forget one of the most renowned aspects of our region: the culture of food. In Tuscany you can taste the world’s finest wines, following dedicated itineraries, or sample typical dishes with an ancient flavour, or enjoy a candlelit dinner on the beaches of the Versilia coastline.
Florence, the cradle of the Renaissance, is one of the world’s greatest cities of art. Giotto’s frescoes, Michelangelo’s David, canvases by Botticelli, Leonardo da Vinci and a host of other greats in the Uffizi Gallery… there is so much exquisite art and architecture that it is hard to know where to begin.
Siena, while lacking the overabundance of artistic riches of its historic rival, this proud medieval city-state is unique in the way its layout stages a kind of symbolic theatre of the Tuscan civitas, with a series of narrow, winding streets converging on the shell-shaped Piazza del Campo.
Lucca, the city’s robust defensive walls give the place a fierce military air on the outside, but inside, everything is pretty squares, Pisan Romanesque churches and open-air restaurants.
Arezzo and the Piero della Francesca Trail, the most essential artistic attraction in the whole of Tuscany: the cycle of frescoes of the Legend of the True Cross by Piero della Francesca in the Church of San Francesco.
The Chianti Classico area between Florence and Siena is a favourite summer destination, as much for its lovely landscape dotted with cypresses, olive trees, oaks and vineyards and its unashamedly picturesque castles and villages as for the good red wine it produces; San Gimignano, the city of beautiful towers, rises imperiously above the vineyards of its wine-growing area.
Home to some of the region’s most perfect scenery, the Val d’Orcia and Montalcino stretches languidly across an unspoilt and relatively unvisited swathe of southern Tuscany. One of Tuscany’s highest towns, Montalcino is at the centre of the prestigious Brunello wine region with its enchanting 12th-century Abbey of Sant’Antimo.
