Bronchitis is an inflammation of the bronchi. It can be acute or chronic. Acute bronchitis is often caused by viral or bacterial infections and leads to persistent cough, mucus production, and sometimes fever. Chronic bronchitis is a persistent form, often related to tobacco smoke or exposure to irritants.
