Esophagitis is an inflammation of the mucosa of the esophagus. It can be caused by chronic acid reflux (GERD), infections, food allergies or irritants such as smoking and alcohol. Symptoms include heartburn, chest pain, difficulty swallowing and feeling of food stuck in the throat.
