A herniated disc is a condition in which a portion of the intervertebral disc protrudes beyond its normal position, putting pressure on the surrounding nerves. This can cause pain, numbness and weakness along the path of the affected nerve. Causes include incorrect movements, heavy lifting, aging or trauma.
